The best advice I have ever heard is that you should try to make the most of every opportunity. I can appreciate that to many people may may sound like some wishy washy mantra, but I assure you it really is good advice. It’s a very simple theory that can be applied in so many ways but I believe if you apply it in business then you really can reap the rewards.
Think I’m talking rubbish? Well just take a look at this simple example. You go to a fast food takeaway and order your favourite burger along with some chips because that’s what you’re hungry for and that’s just what you want. The assistant behind the counter is happy to help and is just about ready to take your money when they ask you “Would you be interested in making that order in to a meal deal? for just another 30 pence you could add a regular softdrink of your choice!”. You didn’t realise the offer was available but now it’s been pointed out to you you realise you have some spare change and think a drink would go down perfectly with your food so take up the offer. And there it is, the sales assistant has made the most of the existing opportunity and increased his sale but with very little additional effort. You were already in his eatery ready to part with your money; he just increased your awareness during your visit and encouraged you to spend more.
Imagine you run a chain of hotels, a customer books to come stay at your Chester branch, they check in and get their room card key in its card wallet and there’s your first opportunity. If you employ a card carrier with plenty of room for promotional print you can advertise the fact that you have multiple other sites making them aware that next time they want a break away they can enjoy the same excellent service, facilities and suroundings at one of your own sites elsewhere! Alternatively, put branding on the ‘room free for cleaning’ door hanger that perhaps reminds them that you offer a laundry service or have a Michelin Star restaurant and this may encourage them to spend elswhere within your company throughout the remainder of their stay increasing your sale for no extra effort!
